You can get advice on sharing a person's information with their nominated contact person (NCP), or their contact in case of emergency (ICE), in Sharing Patient Information with NCP and ICE Guidelines (PDF, 625 KB, 11 pages).
The guidelines explain:
- key rules about data protection
- what to consider before sharing information with someone involved in a person’s care
The main focus is to respect the person’s privacy, dignity, and preferences. You should always aim to protect their rights and only share information when it is appropriate, necessary, and secure.
The guidelines should be read together with the following policies:
Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) Act 2015
HSE Guidance for Point of Care Data Access (PDF, 230 KB, 6 pages)
Why sharing information matters
Sharing the right information with a nominated contact person (NCP) can help keep someone safe and well.
The NCP cannot make legal decisions, but they are usually a trusted person who gets updates and helps with care.
Keeping the NCP informed can:
- make sure care continues smoothly
- prevent misunderstandings
- respect the person's wishes
This is especially important when care changes, during illness, or if the person cannot communicate clearly.
