I am the Lead Breast Consultant Pathologist in University Hospital Limerick. When I tell people that I’m a pathologist, it is sometimes assumed that I attend crime scenes and solve murders. When I explain that I’m not a forensic pathologist, I’m a hospital pathologist, I am often asked: “but what do you actually do?”

Today marks World Sepsis Day and the HSE is encouraging people to learn about the signs and symptoms of sepsis, as early recognition and treatment is important. Sepsis is a life-threatening condition caused by an infection that affects the organs and kills 1 in 5 people who develop it. Sepsis kills more people each year than heart attacks, stroke or almost any cancer.
