Basic Specialist Training in General Medicine (BST GIM)
Basic Specialist Training (BST) in General Medicine is a two year programme of supervised clinical training in Senior House Officer (SHO) posts. Completion of the intern year is an essential entry requirement. On successful completion of the BST scheme, you are eligible to apply for the Higher Specialist Training (HST) scheme.
The Midwest BST GIM is structured so that you rotate to a different post every three months. Each rotation offers 18 months training in University Hospital Limerick, St Johns’ Hospital, Milford Hospice and a further six months training in our peripheral sites - Ennis Hospital or Nenagh Hospital or South Tipperary General Hospital (Clonmel). The combination of posts ensures a broad exposure to acute medicine and different medical subspecialties, with a balance between larger and smaller hospitals.
