People Handling and Refresher Training

People Handling Instructor training

People Handling Instructor training is a blended training course. This training provides participants with the knowledge, skills, and competence to deliver Manual Handling (inanimate) and People Handling training within the HSE.

Line managers, training cordinators or health and safety officers only can book this training.

This training is only available to HSE Employees.

Factors to consider

  • To ensure instructors maintain their competency and return on investment, there must be at least 300 trainees (per instructor)
  • The instructor must have people handling experience and work directly with patients/clients
  • This programme is a QQI level 6 academic award. It requires presentation skills and demonstration of manual handling techniques to a class
  • Instructors must have a level of fitness and physical ability to demonstrate the correct manual handling techniques
  • Instructors must be released from their work to deliver a minimum of ten training programmes per year

QQI Level 6 Certificate in People Handling Instruction

Specification

The People Handling programme is QQI accredited Level 6.

Duration

8 day programme - 2 days online, 6 days classroom. Participants who successfully complete this programme can provide both manual handling and people handling training to employees.

Assessment

At the end of the training participants must undertake:

  • practical skills demonstrations for both manual handling and people handling techniques
  • practical presentation skills demonstration of the theory
  • a written exam
  • a risk assessment-based assignment

How to book

Line managers, training cordinators or health and safety officers must book this training through the Health and Safety Helpdesk.

Training records

Certificates will be emailed to the person who booked the training once the practical module is successfully completed.

Managers must keep copies of employees' training records on file. This is in line with the HSE National Records Retention Policy. The policy requires managers to keep electronic files for 7 years after an employee's term of service ends.

People Handling Instructor Refresher

All active HSE Instructors must undergo a refresher course every three years. This will refresh the knowledge, skills, and competence of Manual Handling Instructors.

Line managers, Training Co-Ordinators or Health and Safety Officers can only book this training.

Duration

2 days classroom based. Participants who complete this refresher training can continue as active HSE Instructors.
