Manual Handling (Inanimate) Instructor Training
Manual Handling Instructor training is a blended training course. Participants will gain the knowledge, skills, and competence to deliver manual handling (inanimate) training within the HSE.
This training is only available to HSE Employees.
Line managers, training coordinators or health and safety officers only can book this training.
Factors to consider
- To ensure instructors maintain their competency and return on investment, there must be at least 300 trainees (per instructor)
- This programme is a QQI level 6 academic award. It requires presentation skills and demonstration of manual handling techniques to a class
- Instructors must have a level of fitness and physical ability to demonstrate the correct manual handling techniques
- Instructors must be released from their work to deliver a minimum of ten training programmes per year
QQI Level 6 Certificate in Manual Handling Instruction
The Manual Handling programme is QQI accredited Level 6
Duration
5 days - 2 days online, 3 days classroom.
Assessment
At the end of the training participants must undertake:
- A practical skills demonstration for each manual handling technique
- A presentation skills demonstration of the theory
- A written exam
- A risk assessment-based assignment
How to book
Line managers, training coordinators or health and safety officers must book this training through the Health and Safety Helpdesk.
Training records
Certificates will be emailed to the person who booked the training once the practical module is successfully completed.
Managers must keep copies of employees' training records on file. This is in line with the HSE National Records Retention Policy. The policy requires managers to keep electronic files for 7 years after an employee's term of service ends.

Manual Handling Instructor Refresher
All active HSE Instructors must undergo a refresher course every three years. This will refresh the knowledge, skills, and competence of Manual Handling Instructors.
Line managers, Training Co-Ordinators or Health and Safety Officers can only book this training.
Duration
1-day programme classroom based. Participants who complete this refresher training can continue as active HSE Instructors.
