European Safety Campaign “Lighten the Load”

Focusing on the prevention and management of work related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs)

Published: 22 October 2021

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) affect millions of workers in Europe and the businesses they work in. Prevention and early intervention measures can reduce absenteeism, increase productivity and lead to real savings for businesses, as well as national healthcare and social welfare systems.

In 2019, approx. 30% of accidents reported to the Health & Safety Authority for health and social work were injuries related to manual handling.   MSDs can affect us at any stage and can greatly impact on both our personal and professional lives.

Postural Awareness Webinars:

As part of this campaign, the National Health and Safety Function (NHSF) have organised a series of webinars to increase knowledge and awareness regarding the prevention of MSD within particular healthcare disciplines. The focus of these sessions will be for staff working in dental including dentists, hygienists and dental nurses and also sonographers including general, echo and obstetrics.

This session will cover the following;

  • optimum workstation layout
  • optimum positioning
  • a requirement for stretching and short “micro-breaks”
  • how to adopt a good seated posture as appropriate.

To learn more about these webinars, including details on how to register, please visit training and events. Details on how to book for the webinars will be published in November.

MSDs and Display Screen Equipment (DSE) Work

It is recognized that the way we work can have an impact on physical health and wellbeing. It is important to address any issues that may cause physical harm through risk assessment. MSDs are a common health risk associated with working at a poorly-designed DSE workstation.
