Sponsorship of Nurse & Midwife Medicinal Product Prescribing Education Programme
Funding is available for registered nurses and registered midwives who wish to apply to undertake a Certificate in Nursing/Professional Diploma Nurse and Midwife Medicinal Product Prescribing education programme.
This funding is available to registered nurses and registered midwives employed by the HSE and HSE funded agencies (Section 38) and registered nurses employed by the Irish Prison Service (IPS) who meet the entry criteria.
The nurse and midwife medicinal product prescribing education programme is provided by a number of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). The education programme meets the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) requirements and standards for Prescriptive Authority for Nurses and Midwives Standards and Requirements (nmbi.ie) (NMBI, 2015).

Who can apply?
To apply for funding you must:
- be registered on the General, Psychiatric, Children’s, Intellectual Disability, Midwife or Public Health Nurse Divisions of the NMBI Register (nmbi.ie)
- have 3 years recent post-registration clinical experience in nursing or midwifery within the past 5 years with the equivalent of 1 year full time experience in the specific area of practice
- have the competencies recognised at level 8 on the Irish National Framework of Qualifications (qqi.ie)
- demonstrate evidence of further education
- have a competent level of computer literacy
- be currently employed as a registered nurse or registered midwife in the HSE or a HSE funded agency (Section 38) or a registered nurse employed by the IPS
- have support from your employer to undertake the programme
- nominate and confirm a designated medical practitioner or mentor
How to apply for funding
In order to secure programme funding applicants will be required to fully complete an electronic “Funding Application Form for Nurse and Midwife Medicinal Product Prescribing Education Programme”. The application form must be downloaded to your computer or device to enable completion and submission and is available at:
Applicants must complete all sections of this form in consultation with the Director of Nursing/Midwifery/Public Health Nursing/Service Manager/Designate.
Please note: to secure funding for the education programme the completed electronic funding application form must be submitted prior to the application closing date for the relevant HEI. Incomplete funding application forms will not be accepted.

After you complete the programme
You will have to work for your employer/health service provider for at least 12 months or for the length of the academic programme undertaken, whichever is longer.
