About World AIDS Day

World AIDS Day is a global movement to unite people in the fight against HIV and AIDS. Since 1988, communities have stood together on World AIDS Day to show strength and solidarity against HIV stigma and to remember lives lost.

Earlier this year, the HSE in partnership with the Poz Vibe Tribe, launched You, Me and HIV, a nationwide campaign to address misconceptions around HIV and help reduce the stigma experienced by people living with HIV in Ireland. You, Me and HIV was developed by the HSE in close collaboration with people living with HIV and community and voluntary groups.

The campaign highlights an important message, that people on effective treatment cannot pass HIV to sexual partners. Before the campaign launched, under 3 in 10 people (29%) were aware of this development in HIV treatment. This World AIDS Day, we are sharing the news that within one year of the campaign’s launch, almost one in two people (48%) know that a person on effective treatment cannot pass HIV on.

This important message helps address HIV stigma in society, a key priority in Ireland’s National Sexual Health Strategy 2025-2035. The strategy aligns UNAIDS targets to end new HIV transmissions by 2030.

You Me and HIV Posters in 8 languages are available to order free of charge on HealthPromotion.ie – search HIV. Order posters for your workplace to help share this important message. Or follow HSE on social media to help share the message further.
