Managing Intoxicant Misuse in the Workplace training for managers

The HSE recognises its employees as its most valuable resource and is committed to providing a healthy and safe work environment. The HSE Policy and Procedure for the Management of Intoxicant Misuse provides a framework for early identification and management of intoxicant misuse in the workplace.

The aim of this module is to provide all HSE managers with the knowledge, skills and aptitude necessary to effectively and confidently manage intoxicant misuse in the workplace in accordance with this Policy.

This training is only available to HSE staff.

Who this training is for

This module is mandatory for line, service and department managers who may have to support and manage staff through an incident of intoxicant misuse at work. It applies to clerical admin Grade V and above; and CNM 1 and CMM 1 and above.

This training will empower you to address these incidents in a structured and supportive manner. Undertaking this training can contribute to creating a safer workplace

Course specification

After completing this module trainees will be able to:

  • describe the roles and responsibilities relating to policy implementation
  • recognise the signs and effects of potential intoxicant misuse
  • manage the risks associated with intoxicant misuse
  • determine when and how the testing service should be used
  • advise of the supports available to assist employees in their recovery from intoxicant misuse

Training records

Managers must keep copies of employees' training records on file. This is in line with the HSE National Records Retention Policy. The policy requires managers to keep electronic files for 7 years after an employee's term of service ends.

Refresher frequency

This module must be refreshed every 3 years. In some cases refresher training may be required more frequently and this will be identified through the risk assessment or training needs assessment (TNA) process.
