“This expansion allows us to care for more people in a modern, private, environment while supporting safer, more efficient care delivery,” according to Sonya Cotter, HSE Manager for Cork North and East, commenting as Mallow General Hospital welcomed its first patients to 24 new-completed single-occupancy inpatient rooms in recent weeks.
The development marks a significant expansion of the hospital’s services and capacity.
Sonya continued: “Welcoming patients into these new single rooms is a significant milestone for us. It increases our inpatient capacity, strengthening our role within the community. And that community has always been hugely supportive of the local hospital.”
The new rooms bring the hospital’s total inpatient capacity from 71 to 95 beds, providing additional space for people requiring admission and supporting improved patient flow across the region.
The increased bed capacity will ease pressure on the acute hospital system and improve access to inpatient services in HSE South West. It further strengthens Mallow General Hospital’s ability to deliver high-quality care in line with Sláintecare principles, ensuring patients can receive appropriate care as close to home as possible.
The completion of this phase is part of the ongoing development of Mallow General Hospital as a key provider of accessible, high-quality healthcare for the region, with the 24 single-occupancy rooms representing phase two of a broader extension project.
Phase one, completed in 2023, delivered 48 single-occupancy inpatient rooms, significantly enhancing patient comfort, privacy, and infection prevention standards at the hospital.
