“There is something especially moving about one generation caring for another in this way – we are all in awe of the craftsmanship of each hat,” according to Julian Henry, Director of Midwifery at Sligo University Hospital, (SUH). She was expressing her gratitude to the residents of Ballyshannon Community Hospital (BCH) in Donegal for knitting hats for newborn babies.

Juliana added: “The care, skill and attention to detail that went into creating these hats reflect a remarkable level of dedication, thoughtfulness and compassion. The kindness shown by the residents embodies a spirit of connection and generosity that resonates strongly within our unit.”

The residents of BCH were recently celebrated for their remarkable talent and generosity, having come together to support their own community, while also supporting newborn babies through their creative endeavour.

Having established the knitting club in the lead up to Easter, the residents initially produced over 300 handmade Easter chickens. These were used to raise funds for the BCH Patient Comfort Fund, directly benefitting residents and enhancing their quality of life.

Building on this success, the group knitted more than 80 hats for newborn and premature babies at SUH. Once complete, they held a special event to present the hats to SUH Midwives Claire Cowan and Trish Howley, who visited Ballyshannon to accept the donations on behalf of the unit.

Commenting on her experience, knitting club member Marie McGinley noted how, as a mother of ten children, she was “very proud to be part of this club knitting hats for all the new babies entering the world in Sligo.”

Fellow club member May Kennedy outlined how it had been “so lovely to be part of the club. I hadn’t been knitting in years and had forgotten how much I enjoyed it.”

Praising the initiative, Donna Reid, Director of Nursing at BCH, said they were “incredibly proud of our residents and the dedication they have shown with this club. Their kindness and willingness to give back to others is truly inspiring. The endeavour has not only been a creative outlet, it has also fostered a strong sense of community and purpose within our hospital.”
