Let’s work together to make HSE and partner services LGBT+ friendly, so that service users and staff can choose to be out and visible knowing that they will be met with respect and inclusive practice.
The HSELanD programme ‘LGBT+ Awareness and Inclusion Training: the basics’, is designed to help staff develop an understanding of how they might make simple changes to their everyday practice in health and social care settings to provide an enhanced service to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.
The course takes around 45 minutes to complete. It is designed for all health and social care staff of all levels and disciplines across the HSE, Tusla employees and all partner organisations, as well as professional disciplines with access to HSELanD.
It is vital that we as healthcare workers learn how to improve our services and workplaces to support people who identify as LGBTI. As an employer, we also want to support you to develop your awareness and expertise to improve our workplaces and make them more inclusive and open environments for everyone.
The programme uses practical, real-life examples to illustrate how attitudes and behaviours can have a profound impact on people’s experience of healthcare, and it emphasises the importance of providing effective, inclusive communication to LGBT+ service users.
The module also includes an ‘Extend my learning’ section, which contains additional information and suggestions as to how learners might further develop their understanding of the issues experienced by LGBT+ people in order to improve the service LGBT+ people receive.
The module was developed by LGBT Ireland and the HSE Sexual Health and Crisis Pregnancy Programme, in consultation with a working group comprised of relevant non-government organisations.
The module is available to staff in all HSE and partner organisations with access to HSELanD .
