About International Day of the Midwife - 5 May 2026
The Office of the Nursing and Midwifery Services Director, the Chief Nursing Officer in the Department of Health and the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) are collaborating to celebrate International Day of the Midwife.
The global theme is “One Million More Midwife” to emphasis the urgent need to address the critical health needs of women.
International Day of the Midwife 5 May 2026 acknowledges midwives and student midwives across acute and community settings in Ireland.
On this day we encourage you to celebrate the role of midwives and student midwives in Ireland with the focus on “the impact of midwifery through innovation, collaboration, diversity and belonging” #ACareerThatMakesADifference.
You can do this by:

Formal Academic Study Funding Application Forms
Apply for funding for nursing and midwifery educational programmes.
If you are a registered nurse or midwife, employed in the HSE, or agreed HSE-funded organisations (Section 38 organisations), you may be eligible to apply for funding support to your local NMPDU for short or formal academic programme fees. This is a part of continuing professional development (CPD).
Before applying for funding
Arrange to meet with your line manager to discuss continuing professional development (CPD).
How to apply
- Read the funding application process details
- Complete your local funding support request form
- Each application must be supported by your director of nursing or midwifery or your line manager
- Submit your completed application form to your local NMPDU, CNME or CLD before the closing date
- Funding support is not granted retrospectively
