The Medicines Management Programme (MMP) are involved in a number of initiatives relating to medical devices for glucose monitoring including continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) sensors and blood glucose test strips (BGTS).
Preferred Products
The Medicines Management Programme (MMP) identified preferred continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) sensors with associated systems in July 2024. An updated review is currently underway.
The MMP identified preferred blood glucose test strips (BGTS) with associated meter(s) for adults with type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus in February 2021. This review was updated in December 2021, February 2023, March 2025 and July 2025.
The MMP has developed resources to support the prescribing of the preferred products, including a preferred CGM sensors poster and preferred BGTS poster, outlining notable features of these products and other useful information.

Reimbursement Application System for CGM sensors
The HSE has implemented a reimbursement application system for continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) sensors, with effect from 1 December 2023. From this date, all patients newly initiated on CGM sensors must receive prior approval for reimbursement support. Reimbursement support is available for patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus only.
