ONMSD and the Older People Clinical Programme

The Office of the Nursing and Midwifery Services Director (ONMSD) supports the National Clinical and Integrated Care Programmes / Clinical Design and Innovation.

The nurse lead's contribution to the implementation of the older people clinical programme includes:

  • creating awareness and promoting the principles underpinning gerontology within the nursing community
  • providing leadership and direction in the development of older persons nursing
  • providing input, advice, support and direction to the National Clinical and Integrated Care Programmes for older people on nursing issues
  • liaising with clinical leads, and lead nurses on other national clinical programme's to promote alignment and integration of all programme solutions in the implementation of NCPOP/ICPOP and improvement of services for older people
  • creating a nursing forum/learning community that captures learning during implementation and learning from existing local good practices
  • membership of the ONMSD leadership team and related projects
  • identifying key nursing aspects related to the implementation of the NCPOP /ICPOP
  • ensuring that programme design, national implementation plans and all supporting guidance documentation are complete, specifically in relation to nursing aspects
  • providing direction and guidance in relation to nursing workforce planning, and the development of advanced practice and specialist roles
  • providing advice and direction in relation to nurse education and training for older persons nursing
  • overseeing the implementation of nurse education and continuing professional development strategies and framework for the development of nursing in older persons services
