ONMSD and the National Clinical Programme Anaesthesia

The nurse lead contribution to programme implementation includes:

  • liaising with the relevant Divisions of the HSE including, Quality and Patient Safety Directorate, the Office of Nursing and Midwifery Services Director (ONMSD) and Hospital Groups to support and promote an integrated approach to implementation of the National Clinical Programme for Anaesthesia (NCPA) to enhance quality care and patient safety
  • leading on review of HSE national Safe Site Surgery policy
  • creating awareness and recognition of the principles underpinning NCPA within the anaesthesia and nursing community at national, regional and local level
  • actively engaging with local sites to implement Models of Care and improve key performance indicators
  • providing input, support and feedback to inform the NCPA, National Clinical and Integrated Care Programmes/Clinical Design and Innovation, Acute Hospitals Division and programme clinical advisory group of developments and progress at implementation sites to ensure alignment with Models of Care
  • providing direction, guidance and support with nursing workforce planning, and the development of specialist and advanced nurse practice
  • developing overseeing the implementation of national standardised education programmes for nurses and midwives in anaesthesia and recovery room care and pre operative admission units
  • liaising with and involving nurses & midwives in the design and development of the NCPA
  • collaborating with other interdependent clinical programmes
  • developing Hospital Group senior perioperative nurse and midwife interest groups to develop and implement standardised best practice perioperative patient pathway processes, to share learning and promote networking across the group.
  • promoting the use of data at local sites to identify areas for quality improvement and assisting with building internal QI capability
  • supporting of audit across the perioperative patient pathway with a focus on the implementation of results
