ONMSD and the Integrated Care Programme for Chronic Diseases (ICPCD) – Diabetes (Type 2), Cardiovascular, Asthma and COPD
The Office of the Nursing and Midwifery Services Director (ONMSD) supports the Integrated Care Programme for Chronic Disease.
The ICPCD focuses on improving standards of care and providing care for four major chronic diseases that affect over one million people in Ireland:
- Cardiovascular disease (CVD)
- Diabetes
- COPD and asthma
Nursing within ICPCD is led by the Director of Nursing, Nurse Lead Integrated Care Programmes for Chronic Disease. The Director of Nursing provides nursing leadership, supports nursing excellence and builds capacity in healthcare delivery.
The Director of Nursing:
- Develops the integrated care nursing roles within the community and acute services in line and in collaboration with services, taking account of nursing developments and nursing policy.
- Strengthens capacity and capability within the nursing workforce and lead on the development of innovative ambulatory care specialist level 8/9 post graduate courses as appropriate collaborating with relevant stakeholders.
- Supports workforce development and workforce planning for existing and new roles,
- Provides nursing leadership to develop innovative approaches to recruitment of specialist posts and the development of alternative and new pathways for Clinical Nurse Specialists and Advanced Nurse Practitioners.
- Supports the delivery of service priorities and reform.
- Influences policy and promoting person centred practice.
- Liaises with clinical leads, and lead nurses on other national clinical programme's to promote alignment and integration of all programme.
- Creates a nursing forum/learning community with Assistant Directors of Public Health Nursing.
- Ensures that programme design, national implementation plans and all supporting guidance documentation are complete, specifically in relation to nursing aspects.
