Sponsorship of Post-Registration Psychiatric or Mental Health Nurse Education Initiative
Sponsorship is available for nurses and midwives who want to do a postgraduate Higher Diploma programme in Mental Health Nursing. University College Dublin (UCD) offers this programme in partnership with the HSE.
This is a 12-month programme leading to registration as a psychiatric nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI).
Once you have accepted a place on the programme, university fees are paid on your behalf by the HSE. As a student mental health nurse, you are a paid employee of the HSE.
Who can apply?
To apply for this programme you must:
- Be registered on the register of nurses maintained by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI)
- have at least 6 months post registration nursing experience within the past 3 years, working 39 hours per week, or its equivalent within the last 3 years if working less hours
- meet the entry requirements set by UCD
How to apply
The campaign will open for applications on 22 November 2023.

After you complete the programme
You must work as a full-time permanent psychiatric or mental health staff nurse, in the service that sponsored you, for at least 2 years.
If you don't do this, you may need to repay the sponsorship fees and the value of the salary received.
This may not apply if the service that sponsored you can't offer you a relevant position. In this case, you can return to your substantive post within the public health service.
