Acute medicine nursing - National Foundation Programme (Level 8)

This NMBI accredited Level 8 (10 ECTS) Certificate programme is provided through blended learning over a 12 week period.

It is available in the Institutes of Technology at Athlone, Dundalk, Galway/Mayo, Letterkenny, Tralee and Waterford.

The programme is delivered 2 times a year:

  • from January/Feb to April/May
  • from September/October to December/January

Students attend college 1 day per fortnight with online work undertaken between college days. The focus of the day in college will be skills development.

Eligibility

To be eligible to undertake the programme you must:

  • be registered as a General Nurse on the current Register of Nurse and Midwives maintained by the NMBI as a Registered General Nurse
  • be in employment within a HSE funded acute hospital acute medicine unit, medical assessment unit, acute medical assessment unit, acute medical short stay ward, acute medical ward (excluding rehabilitation, critical care or high dependency unit), Injury Unit or Emergency Department
  • have completed and returned a Declaration of Compliance form (available from your Assistant or Director of Nursing) to Richard Walsh prior to application to the college
  • have a letter of support if you are a HSE employee from the Director of Nursing/Midwifery confirming their support for you to attend and the availability of a clinical mentor in practice
  • have a written undertaking to be working in the relevant unit or ward for the duration of the programme. This requirement will be verified on the College application form
