Overseas nurses and midwives who want to practice in Ireland

If you trained outside of the EU and you want to work as a nurse or midwife in Ireland you must register with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI).

All overseas nurses and midwives, who wish to work in Ireland, can apply to have their details included on the NMBI register.

NMBI has published a guide for overseas applicants. This guide includes information on:

  • how to identify your application group
  • application request form
  • how your application is assessed by NMBI
  • outcome of the assessment

Adaptation and Assessment Decisions

One of the possible outcomes of the application is 'adaptation and assessment'. This means that you will need to successfully complete a supervised placement in an Irish healthcare facility.

The purpose of adaptation is to ensure that each applicant becomes eligible for registration with NMBI. To become eligible for registration each applicant must achieve a standard of clinical practice agreed by NMBI.
